The Central Bureau of Investigation [CBI] booked two firms in the coal allocation scam on Monday. Interestingly, one of them, Green Infrastructure, had a net worth of paltry Rs 2 lakh. However, the firm misrepresented its worth and claimed that it had a whooping Rs 4,600 crore in its balance sheets.
The CBI also conducted searches at 16 locations on Monday, including Jaipur, Satna, Delhi, Rourkela, Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam.
Sources said that Green infrastructures, promoted by the Karvy Group, inflated its net worth by showing an agreement with the Malaysia-based MMC Berhard Malaysia company.
Apart from Green infrastructures [now Athena Infra Projects Pvt Ltd], Kamal Sponge Steel and Power Limited is the second firm that was booked by the CBI on Monday, which had allegedly inflated its capacity to set up an end-use plant by 25 per cent in the request for recommendation to the steel ministry.
Green infrastructure's directors M S Ramkrishna, Yugandhar Meka, Allure Raju Sitarama, Vemuri Ramesh, Parthsarthy Commandur, Prasad N and unkown public servants have been booked by the CBI.
Besides, the directors of Kamal Sponge Steel and Power Ltd, whose names figured in the FIR, are Pavan Kumar Ahluwalia, Kamaljeet Singh Ahluwalia, Prashant Kumar Ahluwalia, Amit Goyal, chartered accountant.
The CBI registered two new cases of alleged financial irregularities against these companies that were allotted coal blocks in 2006 and 2007. The agency has already registered seven cases in connection with the scam. 'These cases are part of a preliminary enquiry registered by the agency for the period of 2006-2009', a CBI officials said.
The CBI is separately probing coal blocks allocations made during the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government on the directions of the Central Vigilance Commission. The allocations between 2006 and 2009 were made during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance government.
