Capital goes dancing in squares and circles

Update: 2013-04-03 22:53 GMT
The Capital is gearing up to witness a dash of Orissa in its cultural avatar. Dancer Shagun Butani, is instrumental in bringing to fore the traditional Odissi performance which is an attempt to bring to the contemporary and timeless sensibilities inherent in traditional art forms.

Her dance will feature solo compositions from the traditional repertoire, that she will perform. In addition, the evening will also feature Squares and Circles, a choreography by Shagun with three dancers, basically inspired from the geometry that is inherent in the technique of Odissi.

‘Bound by the strict rules of form, Indian classical dance, compels the dancer to be boxed into an invisible frame of unseen shapes. It is only when one learns to play within the boundaries of this frame that the art begins to blossom and be the source of infinite delight. I have tried to bring the possibilities that a dancer can play with while being bound by Chowk and Tribhangi , the two basic positions in Odissi in my new choreography,’ said Butani.

Her experimental works like Door, The Masks of God, The Magic Blue, Oppositions, Sanchari with Self, Darpana, all explore movement vocabulary from the Odissi and Chhau.

Through Squares and Circles, she yet again aspires to understand and create meaningful interactions about this universal art form. If you are a dance enthusiast head over this weekend for the show.
