Cancer is all about journey of life and battle and it needs absolute courage to be in this battle, said K A Khan, a 42-year -old survivor, at the Real Champs League organised by Max Healthcare on Sunday.
Khan was detected with cancer 15 months ago and is still going through a severe chemotherapy process, but his positive attitude has helped him brave the situation.
A first of its kind sports initiative by Max Healthcare, Real Champs League, was organised at the Commonwealth Games Village sports complex for the real life heroes and their loved ones, who have battled cancer and emerged victorious.
The sports complex saw approximately 300 people from different walks of life, coming together and taking part in various activities and games. The sports meet started at 10 in the morning, where cancer survivors, their families and doctors, along with general public joined in huge numbers to support the fight.
There was great excitement on the faces of participants, for many of whom it was a once in life experience.
Olympic champion, Sushil Kumar graced the occasion, cheering the spirit of survivors and awarding the race winners. He shared the moments when his father was also detected with cancer and his battle with the disease.
He said, ‘Sports’ spirit helps in braving cancer. It induces fighting spirit in the patients.’ He encouraged patients and survivors to fight and win. He himself is now preparing for the Asia Championship.
Also present at the occasion were Dr Harit Chaturvedi, Director of Surgical Oncology, Dr AK Anand, Director of Radiation Oncology and Dr Anupama Hooda, Director of Medical Oncology at Max Healthcare, among other senior members of the oncology team.
The event witnessed survivors telling the world, ‘I had cancer, cancer never had me.’ Dr Anand said, ‘In the past, cancer patients were usually scared of any physical activity and tried to avoid effort.
But now numerous studies have shown that exercise and physical activity is an effective means of counteracting several of the negative effects of cancer. The value of exercise and light sports activities has been widely recognised for patients’ rehabilitation and mental recovery.’
Dr Harit said, ‘The Real Champs League is an initiative of Max Cancer Centre to celebrate the fighting spirit in cancer patients and survivors. It has been seen that in all of these survivors, it is their desire to win over cancer combined with the right treatment that gets them through. This is what makes them the real champions in life and there could be no one better to embody this fighting spirit.’
Dr Hooda added, ‘Life does not end with cancer. There are people who have been cured of this problem. The key to its prevention is to go for regular check-ups as advised by the doctor.’
