Can trust AAP to change Delhi

Update: 2014-01-03 23:16 GMT
Now that Arvind Kejriwal has garnered the vote of confidence in the Delhi Assembly, let’s give the Aam Aadmi Party a chance to prove its worth. Instead of erecting bureaucratic and policy hurdles in their way, such as the steep hike in CNG and LPG prices, the other members of the legislative assembly as well as the union government should mend their ways and help the nascent state in the national capital perform to its utmost. Already, the Kejriwal team has announced massive slashes in power tariffs and ordered audits of the discoms that distribute electricity to the households in the region. Along with the 700 litre of free water per day for every metered domestic connection, the power subsidy will come as a huge relief to the beleaguered residents of Delhi, who had been burdened by humongous inflationary measures under the previous government. Obviously, the power distribution companies, particularly the Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Infra subsidiaries BSES Yamuna Power Limited and BSES Rajdhani Power Limited, are scared of the fallouts of the CAG audits, given the allegations against them of installing faulty meters that register inflated unit consumption. Moreover, AAP’s pro-people policies have not gone down well with the entrenched corporate-political nexus that thrives on cronyism. That AAP is aiming at fairer distribution and mass financial mobilisation could hurt the sore throats of the elites of Lutyens’ Delhi all the more, given the political top brass, particularly the section represented by Sheila Dikshit and her ilk, had stakes in privatisation of power distribution in Delhi. Since the rise of AAP signifies the opposite momentum and since its policies, as charted in the 18-point manifesto, are resiliently pro-people and premised on a necessity of transparency in governmental as well as private-public functioning, there is a palpable optimism in the air. Let’s hope the BJP leaves its politics of obstructionism and allows the AAP to work to its best abilities.
