A major fire broke out in a scrap warehouse in Rohini’s Budh Vihar Phase 1 of Outer Delhi on Thursday afternoon.

Around 29 people including a 10-year-old boy and two women have been injured.

Senior fire and police officials confirmed that no one has died in the mishap. According to the fire department officials, the incident was reported at around 2.21 pm. Six fire tenders were sent to the spot to douse the flames. It took the fire fighters more than two hours to contain the fire, said a Delhi Fire Service official.

On being asked if any cylinder exploded inside the godown that caused the massive fire, an officer said: “Some cooking gas cylinders have been recovered from the spot but none of them have exploded. It is a matter of investigation if the fire spread because of the leakage of gas from any one of these cylinders.”

Eyewitnesses told the police: “The fire was so huge that just to see what had happened, locals present in all the adjoining buildings came up on their roof-tops. In the process, many persons including several school-going children who were very curious to witness what was happening, too sustained burn injuries.”

Meanwhile, according to the police, all the persons who have sustained burn injuries have been admitted in three different hospitals. While some have been taken to Bhagwan Mahavir hospital in Pitampura, others have been admitted to Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital in Rohini and Sanjay Gandhi hospital in Mangolpuri.

Amongst them, around two to three people, who have sustained serious burn injuries, have been referred to Safdarjung Hospital and Trauma Centre. A senior police officer confirmed: “No one has died in the incident so far. The injured persons include workers at the scrap godown and others who were attempting to douse the fire.” On being asked what caused the fire, a senior fire department officer said that the exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained.
