Conceding defeat in party-ruled Haryana, Congress on Sunday hoped that the new dispensation will continue the growth momentum that has been in the state during its 10-year rule.

‘A new government is going to come. I hope they will keep the growth momentum of Haryana,’ outgoing chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda told reporters. Hooda said he accepts the people’s verdict.

‘It is democracy. Last time we had got the verdict. This time it is BJP,’ he said. He, however, did not credit ‘Modi-wave’ for the poll results.

‘Modi did campaign for his party. That is usual,’ he said downplaying prime minister Narendra Modi’s contribution in BJP’s success here.

BJP has won 10 seats and was leading in 42 others in the 90-member assembly. Ruling Congress has got four seats and was leading in 10 others.

Meanwhile, Hooda resigned from the post of chief minister of Haryana.

‘Hooda submitted his resignation personally to governor Kaptan Singh Solanki,’ a Raj Bhawan spokesman said here.

Before proceeding to tender his resignation, Hooda met senior officers in the secretariat and thanked them for their cooperation during his long stint as chief minister.

67-year-old Hooda became the chief minister for the first time in 2005 when Congress bagged 67 of the 90 seats. The figure fell to 40 in the 2009 elections.

Even as he trumpeted his government’s development initiatives ahead of the elections, corruption charges against his government turned the tide against him coupled with anti-incumbency factor.
