Legendary sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan lost his sarod which he had named ‘Ganga’ while retuning to Delhi from London by a British Airways flight. He has been playing this particular sarod for the last 45 years. The incident took place on Friday. ‘After damaging my sarod in 1997, British Airways now misplaces my sarod. 48 hours and I still wait anxiously for some news. Still not traced,’ he tweeted Sunday late night.
Amjad Ali Khan told the media that he has lodged a complaint with the airlines but he does not want compensation. ‘I want the airlines to trace my sarod and give it back to me as it is priceless and I don’t want any compensation,’ said Khan. ‘I hope a miracle happens. My sarod was with me for 45 years,’ he added. The Padma Vibhushan recipient was travelling on British Airways and the international carrier has confirmed the incident. British Airways said in a statement, ‘We are working round-the-clock to reunite customers with their bags. We are very sorry that this process is taking longer than anticipated and we fully understand the frustration this is causing.’
‘Heathrow airport’s baggage system in Terminal five has experienced a number of problems since Thursday. This has resulted in fewer than expected bags being transported each day. The process of getting the delayed bags onto the next available flight has also been affected,’ it added.
Khan played his sarod on 21 June while performing at a function to pay tribute to Rabindranath Tagore in Darlington near London. He returned from London on Saturday with his wife Subhalaxmi.
