The ‘Kalamkari’ of Srikalahasti has its origins in Andhra Pradesh, in South India. It is a hand-painted textile using natural colours and illustrating stories from hindu mythology. The name ‘kalamkari’ comes from the word ‘kalam’ which means pen.
The instrument used to paint these textiles resembles a pen, and thus the name. Using the ‘ kalam’ dipped in colour or mordant, free-hand illustrations are made on hand woven cloth, which has been pre- treated with cow’s milk.
Interestingly, cow’s milk has certain natural chemicals which can bleach the cloth and prevent the colours from spreading and blotting.
