Brickbats, bouquets for Manmohan on UPA anniversary

The powers and image of the office of the prime minister came in for contrasting comparisons as the UPA-II completed four years in office. While UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi applauded Manmohan Singh for integrity and efficiency, the BJP said the office of the prime minister has been undermined.

‘The Prime Minister has been fulfilling responsibilities with great dignity irrespective of the unrelenting hostility and abuse by the opposition. We respect him and stand by him,’ said Gandhi at the anniversary dinner of the UPA-II.

On the other hand, the BJP targeted the prime minister saying that presence of two power centres and his indecision, inability and silence have led to an environment of gloom and pessimism in the country.

‘Manmohan Singh is the prime minister, but he is neither a leader of the country nor the leader of his own party. Singh’s colleagues sit with him in the Cabinet and look towards the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for directions. Such a split leadership is the biggest failure of UPA,’ said Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, earlier in the day.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who released the report card of the government, said that it was under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi that the government had been able to bring the transformation.
