The structure, which is being renovated, was evacuated due to the threat throughout the day. Within minutes, senior police officers, bomb squad personnel and sniffer dogs were pressed into service.
Security was beefed up around the heritage building and a the police conducted a thorough search. According to sources, the police have intensified vigilance and are not taking chances.
The building, from where the British once ruled India, was built in the late 1700s. From Independence till 2013, it housed the Chief Minister’s office.
Most of the government departments have been shifted to a building named Nabanna in Howrah as the Writers’ Building is being renovated. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s office is also located at Nabanna.
The cyber cell of Kolkata Police has launched an investigation to track sender of the e-mail. The police suspect that the mail was sent to create panic in the area.
