Blow to INLD campaign as Chautala surrenders

Update: 2014-10-12 22:08 GMT
Political experts have said that INLD may perform well in the multi-cornered fight for the assembly poll. Chautala, also a former chief minister of Haryana, surrendered at Tihar jail on Saturday after Delhi High Court on Friday cancelled his interim bail and had asked him to surrender within 24 hours.

Taking cognisance of the plea filed by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleging that Chautala had flouted his bail conditions, the high court had asked him to surrender. The CBI in its plea had said that Chautala was busy campaigning for his party for the Haryana assembly elections despite being out on bail on medical grounds.

The former chief minister, who has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years jail term in the JBT teachers recruitment scam case, had on 26 September volunteered to surrender after which the court had fixed 17 October as the date for his surrender.

But the court on Friday preponed that date and gave him 24 hours to surrender after he was found campaigning for his party.

Janata Dal (United) chief Sharad Yadav, who was scheduled to address rallies jointly organised by INLD and JD(U), refused to comment on the issue. When Millennium Post contacted JD (U) chief over phone on Saturday, Yadav preferred not to say anything on the issue. ‘I will not say anything on this issue,’ he said.

It’s pertinent to mention here that Yadav has announced his party’s support to the Chautala-led INLD in the forthcoming elections which is scheduled on 15 October.

The party has also called upon all the non-BJP regional outfits to extend their support to ensure the defeat of ‘divisive’ forces in the elections.
