Senior BJP councillor Dr Sanjeev Nayyar was unanimously elected Mayor of North MCD on Thursday while BJP councillor Tarachand Bansal was elected Deputy Mayor unopposed. The opposition Congress has not fielded its candidate for any of the posts.
“I will honestly work to contain corruption in the offices of the civic body. I know even a single ‘dirty’ fish can spoil the entire water so strict action will be taken against whosoever is found indulging in corruption,” said Sanjeev Nayyar.
He emphasised that he would maintain the sanctity of the Mayor’s office besides working in coordination with the bureaucracy. “I will resign the day you notice me in the office of the Municipal Commissioner,” he said to media persons when questioned on accepting superiority of bureaucrats.
He said that his priority would be Swachh Bharat Mission, mosquito-free North Delhi, riddance from menace of stray dogs, corruption-free environment and augmenting revenue. Nayyar is second term BJP councillor from Paschim Vihar (Ward No. 57). He was earlier a member of the Standing Committee and Chairman of Medical Relief and Public Health Committee. The Mayor stressed that the Corporation was facing financial crisis, all efforts would be made to receive the outstanding due funds from the Delhi government and for implementation of municipal reforms which is their constitutional right. He also announced to start sector-wise outdoor advertising policy to increase revenue and contain corruption.
According to Nayyar, the Delhi government is not releasing Rs 480 crore as Municipal Reform Fund (MRF) to the North MCD and a total of Rs 1100 crore are pending with the Delhi government.
“Delhi High Court has given orders in our favour and we will do our best to convince Delhi government to release the funds,” he added. Tarachand Bansal, councillor from Rohini (Ward No. 51) was also elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor of North Delhi.
