BJP’s Harsh Vardhan warns AAP against privatisation of water

‘The foreign companies are eyeing our water resources. These companies have one-point agenda to sell maximum bottled water. If it happens, these companies will financially exploit Delhiites,’ said Vardhan expressing his concerns.

‘These companies want to convert Delhi into a city of bottled water like cities of European countries. It must be stopped and government should focus on providing potable water to every citizen as poor citizens are not able to purchase bottled water,’ he added.

He reminded Kejriwal that the decision of former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit to privatise power distribution in the city has not benefited the people.

According to the record of Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the rate of water in DJB areas are Rs 3 per kilolitre, while it is Rs 15 per kilolitre in the areas where private companies are supplying water.

The high rate of water supplied by private companies does not include electricity charge used in the process. ‘If we calculate the electricity charge, the final amount these consumers are paying comes to Rs 23 per kilolitre, which is around 10 times more than DJB charge for water,’ contended Vardhan.

He argued that it’s unconstitutional to restrict water for any citizen in any way by the government as it a natural resource.
