Sources said the directive to the central leaders to visit the rural areas of Tripura came after union home minister Rajnath Singh, who has been personally monitoring the situation over the last few days, reportedly informed party president Ami Shah about it.
On Friday, the party leadership was directed by Shah to visit Tripura to prepare a first-hand report of the situation. It has been learnt that BJP’s central delegation led by the party’s vice-president and party in-charge of the northeast region SS Ahluwalia was asked to visit the state.
In his two-day stay, Ahluwalia would be visiting the rural areas where clashes took place after the recent panchayat polls and is also scheduled to meet acting governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya.
Ahluwalia also had a word with the BJP’s Tripura president Sudhindra Dasgupta on Friday who told him that the ruling CPI-M workers unleashed terror and attacked the opposition party supporters in different parts of the state after the panchayat election.
‘The team would visit villages in different districts on 28-29 July and talk to the people affected by the violence. Problem started after the BJP, for the first time, secured a majority in five gram panchayats in the 15 July local bodies’ election,’ party sources said.
Earlier, Dasgupta was chased and attacked by CPI-M workers at Jatrapur village in western Tripura while he went there to meet BJP supporters. The BJP workers held demonstrations in front of the state police headquarters in Agartala and demanded action against the culprits.
CPI-M leaders claimed that all the charges against them are false and fabricated.
