BJP wins Noida assembly by-polls with comfortable margin

The BJP candidate, Vimla Batham, defeated Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate, Kajal Sharma, by a margin of nearly 59,000 votes. The Congress candidate, Rajendra Awana, was at the third position while the remaining candidates even failed to secure their deposit.

Since the first round of counting, the BJP candidate secured a lead of nearly 1,800 votes. The lead increased with each round of counting. Out of total 1,66,199 votes polled, BJP got 1,00,433 votes while SP was way behind at 41,481 votes. While Congress nominee secured only 17,212 votes, 1,846 voters chose None Of The Above (NOTA) option.

Batham (63), after winning said, ‘I am thankful to Noida residents who have given their blessings to me. I will work hard for ensuring safety and security of women and to ensure uninterrupted water and power supply in the city.’

Talking about their defeat in Noida, a local leaders of SP said that the party suffered loss due to bad impression of Guddu Pandit, husband of Kajal Sharma and MLA of Dibai. ‘Despite strong opposition, Pandit secured candidature for his wife who was never active in local politics. She never connected with voters during election campaign which spread a wrong message among the voters,’ said a senior leader requesting anonymity.
