‘I will focus on the improvement of education and sanitation systems. The officers of the corporation will be made responsible for non-performance,’ said Sarita Chaudhary, the newly elected mayor. She is three time councillor from ward number 177, Sangam Vihar. ‘We will fight for the rights of the corporation,’ added Chaudhary.
Chaudhary got 64 of the 112 votes while Congress candidate Abhishek Dutt got 48 votes. Besides 104 councillors, four Congress MPs – Sandeep Dikshit, Mahabal Mishra, Ramesh Kumar, and Parvej Hashmi – and five MLAs caste their votes. The MLAs who voted on Tuesday for the post of mayor and deputy mayor are V K Malhotra of BJP, Mukesh Sharma of Congress, Harsharan Singh Bali of BJP, Satprakash Rana of BJP and Arvinder Singh Lovely of Congress. Ajay Maken MP from New Delhi and Congress MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah did not caste their votes.
BJP supported BSP candidate for deputy mayor Sahiram Pehalwan defeated his rival Praveen Rana of Congress by a margin of 11 votes. The three members of the standing committee are Rajesh Gehlot and Subhash Arya of BJP and Nutun Kochar of Congress.
‘We have a total of 36 votes in South DMC, including our MPs and MLAs, but we got 48 votes in the election of mayor and 51 votes in the election of deputy mayor. BJP’s winning margin has also reduced,’ said Farhad Suri, leader of opposition in South DMC. ‘Besides independent candidates some BJP councillors have also voted for Congress candidates in the election,’ claimed Suri.
But BJP election managers refuted his claims. ‘We secured wing margin with the support of all the non-Congress parties and some independents,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, chairman of standing committee. ‘None of the BJP councillor voted for Congress candidates,’ he affirmed.
