BJP rejects south and east DMC commissioners’ proposal to raise taxes

The commissioners in their budget proposals have recommended these hikes and new taxes for the 2014-15 budget on Monday.

South DMC commissioner Manish Gupta in his budget speech has proposed to increase property tax by 35 percent. ‘The tax rate of property taxes was due to increase in 2007 but it was never increased as the political wing was not convinced,’ said Manish Gupta, adding that as per the rule tax rates should be revised every three years. He also proposed to almost double one time monthly parking fee charged on commercial and private vehicles.

 Gupta proposed to continue his endeavours to make South DMC, the first debt free corporation. He presented a budget of Rs 3,335 crore before the standing committee. ‘We are also pushing for increase in parking rates separately as per the directions of Lieutenant Governor,’ he added.

In East DMC, commissioner S Kumarswamy presented the second budget of the corporation, which proposed an expenditure of Rs 2,232 crore.

‘We have demanded to levy four new taxes and revise property tax rates to fund development projects,’ said Kumarswamy. The new taxes are betterment tax, professional tax, electricity tax, and education cess. East DMC has also proposed to install ATMs at all the community centres.

‘The people are already facing price hike so we will not allow any increase or add any additional monetary burden on our citizens,’ said Subhash Aryan, leader of house in South DMC, on behalf of his party.
