About 200 activists of BJP's youth wing were detained for demonstrating outside Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's official residence on Sunday. The demonstrators were demanding Singh’s resignation after two union ministers quit over malfeasance and impropriety.
The activists of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), gathered near the 7 Race Course Road residence of the Prime Minister at approximately 12 noon.
'Two hundred protestors were detained, including BJYM chief Anurag Thakur, and Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel. They were taken in three buses to the Tughlakabad police station and later let off, at approximately 2 pm,' said a senior police official.
Burning the effigy of the prime minister near his official residence, the BJYM protestors managed to break through two police barricades. Police personnel used tear shells and water cannons to push them back.
Speaking on the occasion BJYM president Anurag Thakur said, 'The prime minister seems to be directly involved in the coal-gate scam,’ and demanded his resignation.
The BJP leaders also blamed that over one dozen ministers of the present UPA government are tainted and they must resign from the government.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Metro, which had closed the Race Course station for nearly three hours on police instruction, from 11am onwards, reopened the station for public at 1.51 pm.
