Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won Yamuna Vihar ward and wrested Nangloi East ward from Congress in the civic body by-elections held on Sunday. The party registered victory on both these seats with a huge margin of over 4,000 votes.
‘The results show that people are feeling deceived by the Congress government. They have made their mind to oust the Congress government from Delhi,’ said Vijay Goel, Delhi BJP president.
This was the first election in Delhi after Goel took over the command of the party here.
‘We have raised the issues of power and water along with widespread corruption by the Delhi government,’ added Goel. He credited the victory to the poll management and claimed that the result was satisfying because the party had fought unitedly and a team of dedicated party workers had been deployed for campaigning.
In the by-election result which was declared on Tuesday, BJP candidate Renu Shoukin of Nangloi East ward in North Delhi Municipal Corporation defeated Ramesh Devi of Congress by 4,758 votes. Renu won 15,887 votes while Ramesh Devi bagged 11,129 votes.
Similarly, in Yamuna Vihar ward Asha Tayal of BJP got 13,123 votes against 8,806 votes won by Sushila Aggarwal of Congress. Here the BJP rebel candidate Mala Saxena could manage only 284 votes.
DID AAP PLAY SAFE BY AVOIDING PARTICIPATION IN THE BY-ELECTION?
Did the Aam Admi Party avoid fielding its candidate for the MCD by-election to save an early embarrassment? According to both BJP and Congress leaders, AAP didn’t have the guts to fight the elections and so preferred to stay away. The by-polls were held soon after the party had declared its manifesto.
'They know the ground reality. They are aware of the fact that they don't have public support. So they deliberately avoided an early electoral embarrassment before the Delhi Assembly Election,' said Harshvardhan, former Delhi BJP president and MLA from Krishna Nagar in east Delhi.
'Its surprising that Aam Party has announced to fight the elections in Delhi but avoided the first election that took place after its foray into politics,' he added.
The by-elections were the first to be held in Delhi after Arvind Kejriwal parted ways with Anna Hazare and announced his own political party, declaring to contest on all the legislative segments in the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections.
'We don't want to comment on them but they are just day dreamers. Contesting an election requires a dedicated team of workers which is not possible by a handful of slogan shouters,' said Mukesh Goel, leader of opposition in North DMC.
However, a spokesperson for AAP said, 'We will fight only those elections where we can contribute by making positive changes to society. This was not the case in this election.’
