BJP cries foul over govt’s decision to stop aid to Kashmiris without UID

Leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra on Tuesday strongly condemned government’s decision to stop monthly cash assistance to migrant Kashmiri pandits who do not possess Aadhaar cards.

‘The government is putting pressure on Kashmiri migrant pandits that they should get their unique identification number to be eligible for the monthly assistance,’ said  Malhotra.

According to the opposition leader, the move is not as innocuous as it looks because if migrant pandits are forced to make the card in  the national capital, they will lose their Kashmiri identity and they will be deprived of all the rights they have in Jammu and Kashmir.

‘The situation in Jammu and Kashmir is different than the other states. While an Indian citizen can buy property, or take employment in any part of the country,  he /she can neither buy a property nor get a state government job in Jammu and Kashmir,’ pointed out Malhotra.

Malhotra said the scheme to provide monthly financial assistance to Kashmiri migrants was started in April 1990 and about 3,500 families were getting this aid. According to Malhotra, the sudden condition after  23 years is totally unjustified. He demanded immediate rollback of the condition. He also insisted on a hike of the assistance, given  the unprecedented increase in the living standards.
