Councillors from all three municipal corporations on Tuesday have threatened a march towards Lieutenant Governor’s house if their demands for release of funds, needed to implement various development projects, are not met in three days.
The leaders of all municipal corporations met Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Tuesday to put forward their complaints of non-allocation of funds and pending amount due from the Delhi government.
The councillors claim that the Delhi government owes them over Rs 7,000 crore since their inception.
Subhash Arya, leader of the house in South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said, ‘Over Rs 7,000 crore has been pending with Delhi government since the unification of MCD. We have requested the government to release the funds many times. However, such attempts were made in vain.’
Before the trifurcation of the unified MCD, the body carried the burden of loan payments worth Rs 1,767.40 crores. The loan was to be waived off by the Delhi government and accordingly Rs 803 crores, Rs 626 crores, and Rs 338 crores for south, north and east municipal corporations, respectively, were to be released for these outstanding loans. However, these funds haven’t been released yet.
The BJP-led corporations have accused the erstwhile Congress government of step-brotherly attitude towards the civic bodies.
‘It has been over three years since the trifucration but the loan amount has not been sanctioned yet. The Congress government stalled our funds so as to stop the corporation from carrying out developmental activities,’ said Arya.
‘The L-G has assured us that he would do whatever is under his prerogative’, said Meera Aggarwal, leader of the house in NDMC.
The political wing of the corporation also asked previous Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal for the release of these funds. Meanwhile, the BJP-led corporations have requested the corporators from other parties to also join them in their march towards L-G’s house.
