Launching a full frontal attack against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Janata Dal United MLA Shoib Iqbal and expelled leader Vinod Kumar Binny, on Sunday gave the Delhi government a 48-hour ultimatum to meet their demands on issues such as slashing power and water tariffs, women’s security and a fair probe into the Commonwealth Games scam.

‘We are setting a deadline of 48 hours for the AAP to fulfill our demands. If our demands are not met we will be forced to re-think the support we have given them,’ Iqbal said in a press conference. The rebel Laxmi Nagar MLA Binny claimed he had the support of four legislators, including Shoaib Iqbal and independent legislator Ramveer Shokeen.

The duo also hinted at the launch of an independent political outfit and demanded a rollback of 6-8 per cent surcharge on power rates, daily supply of 700 litre of water without any condition and probe against corrupt individual, whom the party had named in its poll campaign.

Kejriwal’s government, which has 27 MLAs after the expulsion of Vinod Kumar Binny, runs government with outside support from eight Congress legislators. If five rebel government MLAs come together against the rookie party, it will be tough for the government to survive in the 70-member house, where the opposition BJP-SAD, combined have 32 legislators.

Iqbal said that people were not with the AAP anymore. The rebel indicated that he will hold another press conference on Monday, where they are likely come up with a comprehensive list of dissident leaders.

The AAP came to power just about a month ago, riding an anti-incumbency wave against the Congress-led government Sheila Dikshit. The party had promised a corruption-free Delhi, free water and cheap electricity during the campaign for 4 December assembly polls.
