New Delhi: The Lok Sabha, which was adjourned sine die on January 8, was prorogued by President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday.
"The President has prorogued the Lok Sabha which commenced its sixteenth session on the 11th December 2018 on January 10," a Lok Sabha Secretariat press release said.
The winter session of Parliament began on December 11.
"When the House is prorogued, it means that the next session will be a fresh session and it will begin with the speech of the President. The speech of the President mainly highlights the achievements of the government," said a senior official in the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
This move may help the incumbent government, which is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to spell out its achievements.
The next session would be the budget session of the Parliament during which the Finance Minister would present the interim budget. As per political observers, the interim budget before general elections highlights the government's promises for the next period. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the vote on account budget before the general elections on February 1.
As per sources, the government would try to push the passage of some critical legislation, including the triple talaq bill which is pending in Rajya Sabha, during the new session.
