If you are being "harassed" by Income Tax department officials, you can directly write to Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia. Yes, it's true. Adhia has asked genuine taxpayers, who are being 'harassed' by Income Tax sleuths to complete the necessary formalities of "Operation Clean Money", to directly write a mail to him on his official ID rsecy@nic.in and promised necessary action if needed.
Talking to Millennium Post over "notices" by the I-T department over large deposits in their accounts under 'Operation Clean Money', the Revenue Secretary clarified: "It's not a notice. It's just an alert and if alerts have been sent to some genuine taxpayers, they can simply revert back stating that it's not true."
In reply to a question that "alerts" might lead to harassment of genuine taxpayers, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Sushil Chandra said: "No genuine taxpayer will be touched. Even if they get messages, they will just have to reply in the remark column that the particular transaction does not belong to him/her and after verification the case would be closed for ever."
"As of now above 2 lakh people have logged in to our website and out of 18 lakh individuals more than 16,000 individuals have responded online till Friday on the messages sent to them through mails and SMS by the I-T department," Chandra said, adding that there is no need to set up any redressal mechanism in this case.
