Gurugram: Haisha, huisha and it all fell apart. Even as Gurugram's inability to deal with heavy rains had been proved earlier, Tuesday's downpour only exposed the flaws in Millennium City's infrastructure. Three and a half hours of intense rain from 3:30 am to 7:00 am was enough for major roads of the city to be filled with water that was as deep as two to three feet.
Such was the state of affairs that not only were their incidents of cars breaking down but also water entering into vehicles that were getting stuck in jams for two to four hours. For a city that already faced this kind of scenario two years ago, it was yet another situation where Millennium City turned literally into a sinking city.
On July 29, 2016, 55 millimeters of rains had resulted in a traffic jam that ranged to approximately 18 hours. This time public officials defended that even after getting a rainfall of 128 millimeters till 10 am the city had not completely stalled. "Some inconvenience was caused due to delays and traffic congestion and district administration regrets the problem we faced today (Tuesday). We have improved our infrastructure in the last three years which kept the city running even during three times heavier downpour," said a statement from the Deputy Commissioner's Office.
