New Delhi: The ongoing Budget session of the Parliament is not going to be extended beyond the scheduled August 7, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla confirmed to parliamentarians at the Business Advisory meeting on Thursday.

The proposed extension to August 9 was mainly opposed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Congress. TMC Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay had appealed to the Speaker even earlier to not extend the session as the Quit India Movement is celebrated every year nationwide on 8 August. In West Bengal, the day is celebrated with great pomp. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee holds special programmes on that day. Other opposition parties also backed Bandyopadhyay's proposal. The current session started on June 17 and was to end on July 26, however, the government extended it till August 7 to clear pending bills. The government even hinted at extending its maiden session by two days if there was any pending business, sources said.
