NEW DELHI: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee met UPA chairman Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday at 10 Janpath in New Delhi.

Speaking to reporters after a 30-minute meeting with the Gandhis, the TMC supremo said "fighting the polls together" was discussed.

"We discussed current politics and the possibility of all of us contesting elections together in future. In 2019 it will be a collective leadership. Priority is to remove BJP. We will fight together. Whichever party is strong, will fight in respective states. We are strong in our State. We can fight on our own," said the chief minister.

"Amra sobai raja" is a song by Rabindranath Tagore. This is the spirit of democracy. Everybody is king. Everybody is equal."

Earlier, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee said she was not vying for the post of prime minister, and the candidate for the top job would be chosen collectively by all opposition parties.

The TMC office in Parliament was abuzz after Banerjee arrived there on Wednesday and opposition leaders made a beeline to meet her.

On Wednesday morning, she began her diary with a courtesy call to BJP veteran and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani.

Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena, an NDA constituent, also came to meet Banerjee at the TMC office and she invited Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray to the January 19 rally.

The TMC chief also met Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, and Ahmed Patel, Samajwadi Party leaders Ram Gopal Yadav and Jaya Bachchan, DMK leader Tiruchi Siva, YSR Congress leader Vijaysai Reddy, RJD leaders Misa Bharti, Jayprakash Narayan Yadav among others.

Banerjee met JD(S) leader Deve Gowda at Karnataka Bhavan and invited him to the rally.

The Bengal CM sharpened her attack on the BJP over the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, accusing the party of playing vote-bank politics, while also warning that the issue will "destroy" India's relationship with Bangladesh.

She said only one per cent of the 40 lakh residents, whose names are missing from the draft NRC, could be infiltrators, but people are being "harassed" in the name of infiltrators.

She said she has appealed to all opposition parties to send their delegation to Assam. The TMC chief said she has also urged former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha to visit the state.

She said India has excellent relations with Bangladesh.

"Bangladesh is not a terrorist country. After Independence, many people from Pakistan came to Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab. From Bangladesh too, people came to Tripura, West Bengal, Bihar and many other states. They are not infiltrators or terrorists. Is it a crime that Bangladesh and we (West Bengal) share the same mother tongue? They (the Centre) think anybody who speaks Bangla is a Bangladeshi" she said.
