New Delhi: India on Friday expressed its outrage over the recent murders of three Indian students in Canada, calling the incidents “terrible tragedies” and underscoring its concerns for the safety of its nationals in the country. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement, demanded a full investigation into the killings, which have shaken both the Indian diaspora and the broader community.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, stating, “In the last week or so, we have had unfortunate tragedies. Three Indian students have been murdered. We are saddened at these terrible tragedies that have struck our nationals in Canada.” He extended condolences to the victims’ families and emphasised that India’s High Commission in Ottawa and its Consulates in Toronto and Vancouver were offering full assistance.

Jaiswal further highlighted that the Indian missions in Canada are in constant communication with local authorities to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted. The safety and welfare of Indian nationals in Canada, particularly students, remain a top priority for the Indian government, he affirmed.

The call for justice comes amid deteriorating diplomatic relations between India and Canada. Tensions flared in October after Canada accused Indian diplomats, including High Commissioner Sanjay Verma, of involvement in the murder of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India vehemently rejected these allegations, leading to a diplomatic standoff.

Jaiswal also noted that the Indian government had regularly raised the security concerns of Indian students with Canadian authorities, particularly in light of a growing number of hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada. He urged Indian nationals, especially students, to exercise caution and stay vigilant.

With over 400,000 Indian students currently in Canada, the murders have sparked concern within the community.
