New Delhi: Hundreds of students from Jamia Millia Islamia University clashed with police on Friday, after they were prevented from taking out a protest march to the Parliament House against the amended Citizenship Act. Police detained 50 protesters as the violence spiralled out of control and a ban on large gatherings was imposed in the area. In another incident, over 500 people protested against the Act at Jantar Mantar. The protest was called by Jamiat Ulama Delhi State to oppose the move.
At Jamia's protest, police used tear gas shells and batons in an attempt to disperse the agitating students while they were leaving the university premises. Many media persons were reportedly targeted in the course of the incident. Footage of the incident showed police caning protestors clambering over barricades erected to stop them. The police and students have both accused each other of starting the violence.
Delhi Police had barricaded and deployed the adequate number of personnel at the Jantar Mantar and adjoining areas to avert any tragedy.
Meanwhile, the DMRC closed the Patel Chowk and Janpath stations on Delhi Police advisory to prevent the students from using the metro train to reach the parliament. Both the stations reopened about an hour later.
According to police, during the incident, 12 personnel were injured and two of them with relatively serious injuries are under observation in ICU.
