More young people from affluent families are getting involved in crime to support their lavish lifestyle, a trial court has said while sentencing four people to varying jail terms for an armed robbery worth over Rs 1 crore.

‘Recently there has also been a spike in reports of young educated youth belonging to affluent families committing crimes such as armed robbery as happened in the present case and it is on account of increasing culture of consumerism, lust for easy money and no fear of law,’ additional sessions Judge Kamini Lau said. The court also directed for starting criminal proceedings against a woman banker for prima facie deposing falsely to save her husband in the 2009 robbery case.
