Former chief minister of Uttarakhand Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and firebrand Uma Bharati were shown black flags by the supporters of Alaknanda hydro power project on the Alaknanda river near Srinagar in Garhwal. Both BJP leaders reached the religious shrine to protest against the relocation of Dhari Devi temple.
The local deities assembled at the temple on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritya. The supporters of the project said that saffronisation of this issue will not be tolerated at any cost and politicians should stop the game of blaming each other. The construction of hydro power plant is their internal matter and politicians should not play with their religious sentiments.
It is noteworthy that this sensitive issue triggered widespread agitation among environmentalists and religious groups. Last year, many BJP stalwarts like LK Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, submitted a memorandum to PM Manmohan Singh, requesting him not to relocate the Dhari Devi temple. They also demanded that hill state be given 2,000 MW of free power from the centre.
