Kolkata: A woman allegedly throttled her eight-year-old son to death and surrendered at Narendrapur Police Station on Saturday. The woman identified as Tanuja Mondal was subsequently arrested and the victim’s body was sent for postmortem. According to police sources, Tanuja is a resident of Maulihati area at Kheyada. Her husband Prosenjit Mondal is associated with the fish business. The younger son of the couple had died two years back when he was only 18 months old. Locals had alleged that Tanuja had killed him too.

Tanuja’s husband left the residence for work on Saturday morning and she was alone with her son Debjit who studied at Class 3 in a local primary school. At around 10 am, when the woman’s mother-in-law who lives in an adjacent house came to the residence and called her grandson there was no response. Tanuja was also not there. The child’s uncle Tapas Mondal was attracted by the cry and when he opened the door, he found Debjit lying on the bed with a dupatta tied around his neck.

The police arrived at the scene after being informed by the family and sent the body for postmortem. Meanwhile, Tanuja went to the police station and surrendered herself claiming to have killed her son. “Prima facie, it appears that financial constraints led to the incident. We are questioning the victim’s family members and neighbours to ascertain the cause of the murder act,” a senior police officer said.
