KOLKATA: On the 53rd birth anniversary of late music sensation Zubeen Garg, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday paid tribute to the singer, who took Assamese music to the global stage. The iconic singer and cultural icon of Assam, who died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore in September 2025, was described by Banerjee as a “versatile music genius” whose music transcends borders.

“Remembering the versatile musical genius Zubeen Garg on his birthday. His music transcends boundaries,” the CM posted on social media.

Zubeen had a long association with Bengali music. From ‘Chiro Dini Tumi Je Amar’, ‘Paran Jaaye Joliya Re’, ‘Mon Maane Na’, ‘Bolo Na Tumi Amar’ to ‘Romeo’ and ‘Rangbaaz’, the list of his hit songs in Bengal is endless.

On Tuesday, thousands of fans gathered to celebrate the birth anniversary of the legendary singer, composer and philanthropist in Guwahati at his residence. In unison, they sang their ever-favourite song ‘Mayabini’. Apart from the Bengal CM, music composer Jeet Gannguli was present in Guwahati and met the late singer’s wife Garima. Most of Zubeen’s hits in Bengal are Gannguli’s compositions and both shared a deep bond. “I feel he is here, with us, greeting us with his smile and music. He was not just a great artist - he was one of the finest human beings I’ve ever known,” Gannguli posted on social media with photographs.

Meanwhile, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the Union Home Ministry has granted the mandatory legal sanction required to push forward the investigation into the artiste’s mysterious death.
