Kolkata: At a time when the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll is underway in Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) will hold “Samhati Diwas” (Unity Day) on December 6 to send across a message of unity and communal harmony.
Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee and her party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are expected to attend the rally on Mayo Road.
One of the main objectives of organising “Samhati Diwas” is to alert the people of Bengal so that nobody can trigger communal tension or incite violence in a politically volatile situation.
Trinamool Congress often accuses the BJP of fueling communal tension by various means and ways.
Mamata and Abhishek are also expected to give a message of communal harmony when some sections within the society are apprehensive about the removal of names from the electoral rolls.
Trinamool Congress every year observes December 6 as “Samhati Diwas” to commemorate the demolition of the Babri Masjid, a controversial event in Indian history.
The party’s annual commemoration, sometimes referred to as “Samhati Diwas” or “Unity Day,” is held on this date to promote communal harmony.
Sources within Trinamool Congress said the youth and students’ wing of Trinamool Congress will organise the “Samhati Diwas”. The ruling party will lay more emphasis on this day this year.
Mamata and Abhishek led a massive anti-SIR rally in Kolkata on November 4, mounting a blistering attack on the BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI). Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had accused them of turning the ongoing SIR of voter lists into a political tool for a “silent, invisible rigging” ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.
She warned that the fall of the Narendra Modi government would be “inevitable” if even a single eligible voter was deleted from West Bengal’s rolls during the SIR conducted by the ECI in the state. Abhishek had alleged that the BJP and the EC were “colluding to erase voters from opposition-ruled states” while sparing those governed by the saffron party.
Ever since the SIR process was announced in Bengal, both the leaders have asserted that if even one genuine voter’s name is struck off the rolls, the BJP government will be shaken to its core. A massive protest will be organised in Delhi.
