KOLKATA: A 47-year-old man from Jharkhand was diagnosed with a rare surgical oncology condition, leiomyosarcoma arising from the suprarenal segment of the inferior vena cava (IVC). Following a successful surgery at Ruby General Hospital, he is recovering well and preparing for the next phase of treatment.

Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava is an extremely rare malignant (cancerous) tumor arising from the smooth muscle lining the walls of the large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart (inferior vena cava). This rare neoplasm accounts for less than one in 100,000 of all malignancies and about 0.5 per cent of adult soft

tissue sarcoma. The Jharkhand resident came to Ruby General Hospital a few months ago with complaints of a vague abdominal pain and was admitted under Dr Oindrila Biswas, consultant surgical oncologist. After a thorough evaluation like CT abdomen, USG guided biopsy and Immunihistochemistry (IHC), the patient was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma with uncertain origin.

The surgical exploration confirmed the presence of leiomyosarcoma, which had been arising from the suprarenal segment of inferior vene cava. The area of contact was much less, thus, complete resection of the tumour was done with primary venorrhaphy (surgical repair of vein).

The postoperative period had been uneventful though he had to be transfused with Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC) and Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP).

“It is a very rare disease occurring in only 0.5 per cent of all the cases of sarcoma. In India, only 22 cases have been reported till 2024. The gentleman is improving gradually and further treatment has been planned,” said Dr Biswas.
