Siliguri: With the growing success of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Siliguri, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) is taking steps to expand the initiative and provide greater opportunities for women. The programme, which has enabled many women to achieve financial independence, has sparked widespread interest, leading to a surge in applications from women eager to join.

“The Self-Help-Group project has become a significant success. Many women are now earning and supporting their families through these groups. Seeing this progress, more women have applied to join. To accommodate them, we are working on creating more groups,” said Ranjan Sarkar, Deputy Mayor of Siliguri.

According to SMC sources, there are currently 1,300 registered SHGs spread across all 47 wards under SMC. In response to the rising demand, 200 additional groups can be formed with new applicants.

To enhance the effectiveness of SHGs, SMC operates training centres offering a variety of skill-based programmes. Initially focused on handcrafted products, the SMC is now providing training on skills such as cooking, baking and makeup, as the demand for these skills is high. The Deputy Mayor also revealed plans to increase financial aid provided by the state government to help SHGs establish and grow their businesses. “We are in discussions with the respective authorities to raise the financial assistance provided to these groups,” he stated. In addition to participating in state-organised fairs to sell their products, SHGs have found other lucrative ventures, such as making school uniforms for government institutions. This diversification of activities has further solidified their financial stability and contribution to the local economy.

The efforts of SMC to expand SHGs reflect a commitment to empowering women and fostering community development in Siliguri. With the planned increase in support and training, more women are expected to benefit from this initiative.
