Kolkata: A stretch of the EM Bypass leading to Peerless Hospital was formally named “Sunil Kanti Roy Sarani” on Tuesday in memory of late industrialist and philanthropist Sunil Kanti Roy.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation had earlier this year approved the proposal to name the stretch after Roy. The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Kolkata, Firhad Hakim, Jadavpur MP Saayoni Ghosh, councillor Ananya Bandopadhyay, apart from directors of the Peerless Group.

Mayor Firhad Hakim, addressing the gathering, recalled his interactions with Sunil Kanti Roy, describing him as a man of remarkable humility. He praised Peerless Hospital, saying it “never turns down any patient” and always ensures the best possible treatment.

Hakim added that the city felt proud to name a street in Kolkata after a Bengali, noting that Roy’s contributions to the state made the gesture especially significant.

The newly-named road runs alongside Peerless Hospital, which was established in the early 1990s under Roy’s leadership. According to the Peerless Group, the naming is a tribute to Roy’s values of integrity, service and social responsibility.

In a message issued for the occasion, Jayanta Roy, son of SK Roy and managing director of the Peerless Group, said the naming was more than ceremonial. He reflected on Bengal’s journey from the load-shedding years of the 1980s and the hartal-hit 1990s to what he described as a more confident, investment-oriented Bengal.

He said the milestone reaffirmed both the government’s development priorities and the ideals associated with Sunil Kanti Roy. “This road will forever carry the ideals and inspiration of Sunil Kanti Roy,” he noted. Founded in 1932 by Radhashyama Roy, the Peerless Group has grown from a mission to provide financial security into a diversified enterprise spanning healthcare, hospitality, real estate and financial services, rooted in trust and social good.
