Raiganj: Tensions flared in the Chopra area of North Dinajpur district on Monday evening after police arrested nine individuals for allegedly obstructing law enforcement officers during a raid to apprehend a wanted criminal.
According to sources, the incident occurred in Mirik Basti village, where a police team had launched an operation to arrest Sadhan Biswas, a notorious criminal reportedly involved in gambling activities. As the officers approached the area, a group of locals allegedly confronted them, attempting to prevent the arrest. The mob reportedly wielded lethal weapons, forcing the police to retreat temporarily.
Reinforcements from Chopra Police Station soon arrived and brought the volatile situation under control. However, in the chaos, Sadhan Biswas managed to escape.Subsequent raids in the area led to the arrest of nine individuals accused of manhandling police personnel and obstructing their duty.
Speaking on the matter, Suraj Thapa, Inspector-in-Charge of Chopra Police Station, stated: “We have arrested nine individuals for attacking and preventing police from performing their duties. They were produced in the Islampur sub-divisional court on Tuesday and we have sought police custody for further investigation.” Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to locate Sadhan Biswas, who remains at large.
