14 hurt in Islampur clash

Fourteen persons were injured when a clash took place between the activists of TMC and independent candidates at Basak para in Ramganj under Islampur police station areas of North Dinajpur district last night. Both groups allegedly attacked each other with lethal weapons, pelted stones and allegedly exploded bombs. Police immediately reached the spot and restored law and order.

The injured are undergoing treatment in Ramganj Hospital. One TMC member Swapan Basak who received a serious head injury is being treated at the Islampur Superspecialty hospital. Tension spread in the locality after this incident.

A supporter of independent candidate Suniti Basak alleged: “Last night we were campaigning for our independent candidates at Basakpara in Ramganj. Suddenly a gang of anti-socials led by TMC member Swapan Basak armed with lethal weapons and stones attacked our members. Eight of our members were injured in this attack. I also got hurt on head.” On the other hand Swapan Basak, a TMC member said: “Last night I was standing near a shop at Basak Para. Suddenly some independent supporters armed with lethal weapons attacked me. I received a serious head injury. They also fired in the air and hurled bombs too. I immediately informed the matter to our TMC members. They soon turned up on the spot. Six of our members were injured in this attack.”

The Superintendent of Police of Islampur Police District Jasprit Singh said: “Police patrolling has been intensified in the locality. An investigation is on.”
