Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), self regulatory body of the television industry, has imposed financial penalties on two channels for airing objectionable content in a first.
The two channels in question – Big CBS Love and Big CBS Spark – have been fined Rs 10 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh respectively. These channels’ progrmammes were found to be in serious violation of (Indian Broadcasting Foundation’s (IBF) self-regulatory guidelines. The two channels have also been directed to run apology scrolls for seven and three days respectively.
Last month, the board of directors of IBF empowered BCCC to impose financial penalty up to a maximum of Rs 30 lakh on channels in some exceptional cases of serious violations of the self-regulatory guidelines and BCCC has exercised the new provision for the first time.
In its order against Big CBS Love, BCCC said it had received a series of complaints from the Information & Broadcasting Ministry regarding telecast of programmes – Sex and the City, America’s Next Top Model and Britain’s Next Top Model – which showed ‘indecently clad models and characters in objectionable acts’.
The BCCC said it was ‘really shocked to see the clips of the shows in question’ and concluded that these programmes were in gross violation of IBF guidelines as well as the programme code.
