On the occasion, a few senior BJP leaders like Vijay Goel, Vijender Gupta, Nand Kishore Garg, Sham Lal Garg, Mange Ram Garg and hundreds of party supporters attended the event.
Before filing his nomination papers, Harsh Vardhan inaugurated the BJP’s central campaign office for the constituency on GT Karnal Road adjacent to State Bank of India Colony.
Addressing supporters after the event, he lamented on the living conditions of the people in Chandni Chowk where the infrastructure is ‘way behind the people’s expectations’.
‘Kapil Sibal, who was elected from here twice, has betrayed the mandate. The people elected a central cabinet minister and as a double advantage, they had a Congress chief minister. Sibal could have done so much if he wanted to. Tragically he did nothing,’ said Harsh Vardhan.
He has declared movable assets worth approximately Rs 39 lakhs, which includes the assets of his wife Nutan Goel and his two children. He has shown immovable assets worth Rs 2.4 crore, which includes an inherited property at Krishna Nagar. He has liabilities worth approximately Rs 17 lakh in car and home loans. According to his affidavit, two criminal cases are pending against him. In both cases charge sheets have been filed.
Another prominent person who filed his nomination from Chandni Chowk was Aam Aadmi Party candidate Ashutosh. After filing his nomination papers, Ashutosh, a journalist turned politician, said that AAP was going to win all seven Lower House seats in the national capital.
Asked if he was confident of winning despite prominent leaders like Harsh Vardhan and Kapil Sibal contesting elections from the same seat, he only said ‘both leaders were prominent, but not anymore’.
Ashutosh also rejected the concept of a ‘Modi wave’ in the country. ‘I don’t think the ‘Modi wave’ is everywhere in the country. Bharatiya Janata Party had also seen such a wave in 2004, but what happened at that time you very well know,’ he said.
Ashutosh alleged that social media and opinion polls are being manipulated to create a wave in favour of a particular person, adding that there should be probe into such allegations to find out who all are behind this.
‘Our dream is to make country corruption-free. I am very confident that I will win these elections from Chandni Chowk,’ he added.
Aam Aadmi Party candidate Ashutosh declared a total of Rs 70,000 case in hand. He has Rs 1.5 lakh placed on a fixed deposit. Ashutosh and his spouse have assets worth Rs 4.27 crore and Rs 3.42 crore respectively. He has 230 gram of gold jewellery worth Rs 6.44 lakh.
