Oblivious of the threat issued by BSP national president Mayawati asking chief minister Akhilesh Yadav to ‘stay away from memorials built in memory of dalit icons’, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning to give open spaces in memorials and parks on rent for weddings and other functions.

In its annual meeting held recently the memorial maintenance committee has decided to throw open these memorials for marriages and other events. ‘The decision has been taken in principle to give these memorials on rent for oragnising marriages and other functions,’ a senior official said.

The SP government had during election campaign had announced to build hospitals in vacant spaces of the 14 parks and memorials built by the Mayawati government in Lucknow and Noida. Akhilesh Yadav reiterated this in his first press conference.

Later, the government shelved the idea because of many legal technicalities.

‘The maintenance committee has decided to give open spaces for wedding celebrations and other functions including religious and social and exhibitions,’ the official said.

‘Once this decision is implemented it will generate revenue required for maintenance of the memorials,’ the official said.

The administrative offices of other places could now be given to government, semi-government departments, corporations and different bodies on rent.
