The alignment of the third phase of the Barapullah elevated project, which will involve extending the elevated road from south Delhi to Mayur Vihar Phase I, was approved by the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering Centre) (UTTIPEC) on Thursday at a meeting chaired by Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung.

The project proposes the construction of a flyover parallel to the existing single carriageway flyover along the UP Link Road near Mayur Vihar Phase-I.

Talking about the development PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said, ‘With the approval for phase three, the PWD can now extend the link from INA Market to Mayur Vihar Phase-1. The project is being developed in three phases.’
Phase one will include construction of the elevated road between Sarai Kale Khan and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Phase two of the project involves extension of the stretch up to the INA Market, while Phase three will extend the elevated road to Mayur Vihar.

Moreover, the Public Works Department will also construct cycle tracks and footpath along the phase three stretch of the elevated corridor. The road will have four lanes and will have loops.
Chauhan said that the department has appointed a Pune-based research institute to conduct hydraulic study for the new Yamuna bridge. The plan will now be sent to Delhi Urban Art Commission and it will soon commence the process of preparing a detailed project report.
Motorists using the extended road stretch will be able to descend near
Mayur Vihar Phase I Metro station. Similarly, those heading towards Sarai Kale Khan can climb on to Barapullah road near the metro station.

Phase three, which will extend the elevated road to Mayur Vihar through the Yamuna river, is expected to be used by 1.5 lakh motorists on a daily basis.
‘The project, which may cost around Rs 700 crore, is expected to start in 2014 and be completed by 2016 and the cost of the entire project will be recovered by the end of 2018,’ said PWD officials.
Work has already started on phase two of the project which will extend the road up to INA Market.
