Auto-lifter excuses self, flees from Uttam Nagar police station

In an incident highlighting negligence on the part of Delhi Police, a 24-year-old auto-lifter, accused of stealing a motorcycle managed to escape from the premises of the Uttam Nagar police station situated in West Delhi.

The incident took place at around 12.30 am on Tuesday when Amit Kumar, an auto-lifter came back to the Uttam Nagar police station after the mandatory Medico-Legal Cases (MLC) check up at the nearby hospital.

An investigating officer said: “Amit had returned to the police station after the MLC. Accompanied by one constable, Amit requested that he wishes to go to the toilet. He was taken to the toilet. While he went inside, the police constable went ahead to attend a phone call. Taking advantage of the fact that the constable was distracted, Amit broke down the grill of the toilet window and escaped.”

The officer further added that Amit was not handcuffed at the time of the incident. “We have registered a case under Sections 224 (Resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code at the Uttam Nagar police station. Investigation is on to nab him,” said Pushpendra Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West).
 
In a similar incident where an accused escaped from police custody, an Afghan national, accused of killing his compatriot, who was being brought to Delhi from Pune, managed to flee from custody of the Delhi Police by jumping out of a speeding train shortly after his arrest.

According to the police, Hafizulla allegedly killed 24-year-old Sayed Azmarai, who used to earn money by resolving issues related to VISA and passports of Afghans, in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area.
Hafizulla had fled the national Capital immediately after the incident. Earlier, the victim had deposited Rs 
40,000 with Hafizulla for renewing his passport.
