Art high

Capital will soon witness an exhibition which brings new meaning to the fusion of the `low’ art of Ravi Varma’s oleographs and the inspiration derived by contemporary Indian artists to make their own ‘high’, personalised art.

This exhibition titled When High and Low Art Meet, hopes to bring new creative expression and imagery to city's art lovers. There will be many ways that the contemporary artistic sensibility will react to Varma’s oleographs in varied ways as it could range from the narrative to the ironic, the kitsch and the decorative or offer a commentary on contemporary times.

Varma’s oleographs are prints textured to resemble an oil painting. His works have in past stimulated the imagery of a few contemporary Indian artists. But with this exhibition it would be provocative to speculate on the idea of the oleographs as catalysts, as offered to a larger group of Indian artists.
Picking up the theme of oleographs will be mirrors, lamps, waistcoats, dresses for children, evening, tote bags, cushions, coasters, place mats among others.
