“We are elected representatives. We have one and a half years of tenure left. We will not resign at any cost. We are ready to face worst and approach the court,” said a chairperson of an APMC who was present during the meeting.

“The chairperson of Delhi Agriculture Marketing Board VC Rai and Janrail Singh, the parliamentary secretary of minister Gopal Rai, both, asked us to resign immediately. They said that they were following the directions of development minister Gopal Rai,” he added.

In Delhi there are presently eight APMCs, out of which, five have working chairpersons. They are Mukesh Tiwari for Gazipur, Kamalkant Sharma for Narela, Ajay Choudhary for Keshopur, Charan Singh for Najafgarh, and Ashok for Flower Mandi Gazipur.

These representatives are elected for three years tenure. The chairperson of APMC Azadpur, Rajendra Sharma, was not elected and was thereby removed by the previous AAP government.

The remaining two Mandi Samitis — Khoya Mandi, Kashmere Gate, Murga Mandi and Gazipur are lying vacant. The chairpersons of the APMC control the management of Mandis in Delhi and the new government has alleged them of corruption, as they all were elected during the tenure of the previous Congress government.

According to sources the government is of the view till the chairpersons from these APMCs are not removed they would not be able to rationalise vegetable prices in the city.

In his first visit to APMC Azadpur last week, Gopal Rai has publicly reprimanded the officers including doctors attached to the Mandi on prevalent corruption. He has promised to set up five dispensaries for labours including some other reforms.
