The face-off between local Congress legislator and Prakasam district Congress committee (DCC) president Amanchi Krishna Mohan and human rights activists took a serious turn on Sunday when the Prakasam district police arrested PUCL leader Jaya Vindhyala at her residence in Secunderabad.
She was arrested based on a complaint lodged by Krishna Mohan. The police said Jaya was arrested under Section 66 of Information Technology Act, which is non-bailable.
Jaya Vindhyala was being brought to Chirala and likely to be produced before court on Monday. Earlier, Jaya filed a petition in the AP high court alleging that the local legislator was acting a like a goon and depriving local people of their rights.
Krishna Mohan in his complaint had alleged that Jaya’s postings on Facebook caused not only damage to his reputation but mental trauma as well. He said Jaya had been threatening him to support a local contractor, who was blacklisted by government departments for irregularities and misappropriation.
He said the rights activist had also warned him of serious consequences if he did not bail the contractor out of troubles. Rights activists flayed the police action saying they were acting as henchmen of the local legislator. DSP Narahara, however, rebutted the charge and said they had acted based upon a complaint lodged by Krishna Mohan.
