The deceased cop, identified as Hazarilal, was posted at the Bhalswa Dairy police station in the north-west district. On Thursday night, he was patrolling the area on his bike when a speeding truck hit him from behind and ran over him, which led to his death.

The errant truck driver, identified as Rajat Kumar (19), was arrested after a small chase and the truck was impounded. The truck was going towards Himachal Pradesh. He was booked for rash driving and negligent driving under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code, said a senior police official.

The incident took place at a traffic signal near a temple in Alipur where the official stopped his motorbike at the signal. “When he was at the signal a speeding truck crushed him from the rear side and he died on the spot”, the police officer added.

He further said there was a police post near the spot and cops deployed there started chasing the accused in the van. “Rajat was arrested after a brief chase”, he informed.

At the time of filing this report, it wasn’t confirmed whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or any other drugs. However, police sources have informed the truck was overloaded due to which the driver lost control.

Hazarilal joined Delhi Police in 1977 and belonged to Sonepat. He stayed in Delhi at the police quarters adjacent to the Bhalswa Dairy police station.

In the recent times, several on-duty policemen have become the victim of road accidents. Recently on November 22, a 45-year-old head constable police was killed by an overloaded truck near Kalkaji depot in southeast Delhi.

The officer was on his motorbike and had just reached near the Okhla phase I crossing when he was hit by the overloaded truck on the rear side. He died on spot.
