Anna says sorry, supporters still unruly

Trying to restrain his supporters from indulging in acts of violence, anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare on Tuesday warned his supporters that if they do it again, he would withdraw the agitation. However, the supporters seemed to be in no mood to change and some of the protestors continued to act in an unruly manner against visitors. On Monday, the supporters had acted violently against media representatives. Supporters of the Team had allegedly also indulged in violence while protesting outside the PM's residence on Saturday and that of Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Monday. Senior Team Anna members had on Monday accused the media of being biased. 'The media is manipulating the reality here for the sake of their TRPs.

Channel owners are not presenting the real picture, Shanti Bhushan had said and within seconds scores of Anna supporters at Jantar Mantar had started heckling the media representatives gathered there.

In another development, Team Anna members hinted that the Team will oppose the UPA in the next Lok Sabha election, saying that its mission is to ensure that 'new and apt people' come to power in the 2014 polls. It also attacked the BJP alleging that it had supported the Team earlier with a political motive.  Anna as well as his team members apologised to media representatives for the crowd's earlier misbehaviour. Anna said that he was saddened by what had happened.

'I apologise on behalf of my supporters and the Team,' he said. 'We have to work with the media to strengthen democracy. I request everyone not to misbehave to the media in future. If any such thing happens again, I will stop my agitation,' Anna said at the fast venue at Jantar Mantar.

Later in the evening, Anna said that he would return the Padma Bhushan bestowed on him by the Government of India at an appropriate time. Anna during the address, also ruled out the possibility of any talks with the government or the Prime Minister to end the fast.

Anna's fast entered its third day on Tuesday, while his team members – Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai have been fasting for seven day. Earlier doctors had advised hospitalisation for Kejriwal and Sisodia but they rejected it.

Earlier in the day, Team Anna member Kiran Bedi criticised the central government for betraying the country. Another member Prashant Bhushan repeated the charges against three central ministers – Praful Patel, Vilasrao Deshmukh and Virbhadra Singh. Actor Ranvir Shorey also came to the venue on Tuesday.


COPS FILE DEFACEMENT CASE AGAINST PROTESTORS


A case was filed on Tuesday against unknown people for defacing the wall of the Prime Minister’s residence during the protest by Team Anna supporters’ protest last week.

A case was registered at the Chanakyapuri police station under section 3(1) of the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act of 2007.  Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said that a  case has been registered against unknown persons.

A case has been registered at the Chanakyapuri police station in New Delhi and investigation has been taken up, said a police officer.

‘Under this act, a person is booked under charges of defacing any property in public view by writing or marking with ink, chalk, paint or any other material. If somebody is found guilty in the case, he can be either imprisonmened for a term extending up to a year or imposed a fine up to Rs 50,000,’ the officer added.

Around 100 Team Anna supporters, including women, had staged a protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence on Race Course Road on Saturday. Some of the protesters had defaced the wall and threw coal inside the premises.

Police had immediately rushed to the spot and detained the protesters. The protesters were also seen trying to climb the gates of the well-secured residence while the police tried to prevent them from doing so. They also wrote slogans against the Prime Minister on the roads as well as the walls   of the residence.

Meanwhile, police served a notice to India Against Corruption on Monday for conducting a candle march rally from India Gate to Jantar Mantar.  

In the notice addressed to Neeraj Kumar of India Against Corruption (IAC)  the police said that the police had not given permission for the rally  and that the protestors had organised the rally in spite of it.

The police has also requested Team Anna members not to make any provocative speeches from the dais.

The team was requested to abide by the terms and conditions accepted by the members before the fast started.


WORKERS HURT AS RAMDEV TENT COLLAPSES


Six labourers were injured after an iron structure, which was being prepared to make a tent for yoga guru Ramdev's scheduled protest on 9 August at Ramlila ground, suddenly collapsed on Monday night, police said. The incident was reported around 10.30 pm when the temporary pillars made of iron collapsed. There were around 20 people working at the spot, along with volunteers when the incident took place.

Six labourers were injured after the iron rods fell over them. The volunteers and other labourers working  there immediately rushed to rescue the trapped labourers. Meanwhile, police too rushed to the spot and the injured were taken to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash hospital just a few meters away from the accident spot.

'Two of the labourers sustained leg fractures while the other four received minor injuries and have been discharged after first aid,' a police officer said.

During probe, police found that two temporary iron pillars that had been erected to make the tent, were not properly fitted to the ground which led to the accident.

The injured labourers were identified as Pankaj, Hari Ram, Raghubir Prasad, Kuljeet Kumar, Rohit Kumar and Santosh.  Hari Ram and Kuljeet Kumar received sustained leg fractures. No case has been registered yet.
