OP Dhankar, Satyapal Singh and other Jat MPs were present in the meeting. Sources said, the meeting was to review the current situation in Haryana and UP (West) after the second phase of Jat agitation. Few youths were reportedly arrested during the quota agitation in February. The Jat protesters have been demanding release of ‘innocent youths’ and have also demanded withdrawal of cases against protesters during the current phase of agitation.
The decision of withdrawing agitation was taken on Sunday after a marathon meeting held between All India Jat Arakshan Sangarsh Samiti (AIJASS) president Yashpal Malik and Haryana Minister Krishan Lal Panwar in Delhi on Saturday.
Reportedly, Haryana Chief Minister Manoharlal Khattar and MoS Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Sanjeev Balyan met the party president on Sunday evening and presented the report on the Jat quota agitation. Sources said, according to the report, the Jat leaders have given the ultimatum to the BJP-led state government till August. The CM also stated in the report that the government has done so far, what they could do. But rest depends on the court's decision.
The government assured the agitators that their demands will be looked into within the ambit of the law. The Haryana Backward Classes (Reservation in Services and Admission in Educational Institutions) Bill, 2016, was passed unanimously by the state Assembly in March, which proposed to include Jats and five other castes under the backward class category by bifurcation and to provide them reservation in government jobs and educational institutions.
However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had given a stay order on the Haryana government’s decision to grant reservation to the community. The court also issued a notice to the state government, asking it to reply by July 21.
Another purpose of the meeting was also to preview the status of 'Vikas Parv' programme in the both regions. Shah ordered all the MPs to conduct the programme with the aim of reaching more to the mass at their respective constituencies.
Reportedly, teams led by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu and another team led by the party president Amit Shah are in charge of previewing the status of ‘Vikas Parv’.
